• Do I have thyroid?

Yes, everyone has thyroid gland! If it grows big in size it can come to your attention or to the attention of your doctor.

• My doctor says my eye problem is thyroid related?

Thyroid disease particularly hyperthyroidism due to a condition called Graves’ disease may be associated with prominence or protrusion of eye balls, redness watering etc. You can read more on this in our thyroid related eye disease section.

• I don’t have any swelling in the neck… still my endocrinologist says that I have a thyroid problem?

Yes. It is possible that your thyroid gland has normal size, yet it may not be producing hormones properly. If it produces less hormones it is called hypothyroidism, if more hormones are produced then the condition is called hyperthyroidism.

• I have thyroid swelling in the neck… still my endocrinologist says that I don’t any treatment?

Yes, Mild increase in the size of the thyroid gland can happen due to various reasons, including natural events like puberty and pregnancy. Also in some cases, the same diseases causing thyroid hormone abnormality may cause only a slight increase in the gland size without any other ill effects. Unless the increase in size causes problems due to pressure effects on nearby structures like food-pipe or wind-pipe or is looking ugly, no treatment may be required. However we urge that you consult your doctor to ensure that nothing important is overlooked.

• Can I buy thyroid tablets loose without the container / bottle?

No, never buy thyroid hormone tablets loose without the bottle or container. Tablets loose potency when exposed to light and humidity. For the same reasons carry the entire bottle capped tightly while traveling.

• Is thyroid gland essential for life?

Yes, Indeed. Thyroid hormone is required for the proper functioning of each and every cell of the body. Hence thyroid gland is essential for life. If the gland is removed for some reason, then it is absolutely essential to continue taking thyroid hormone pills for life. Very low levels of thyroid hormones in the body can lead to coma and if neglected death in extreme cases.

• My mother has thyroid.. I too got it. Is thyroid disease heridiatary?

Certain thyroid diseases like hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are known to run in families. The persons may have genes which predispose them to develop the related conditions.
