Osteoporosis means increased porosity of bones. This leads to weak bones that can break easily.

Osteoporosis is a silent disease, since bone loss is without symptoms, till a fracture actually occurs.
Is osteoporosis a common disease?
Yes, indeed. In the US, one out of every two women has an osteoporosis related fracture.Indians are thought to be particularly prone to osteoporosis. Between 25% and 60% of women over 60 years of age develop spinal compression fractures.
Who are at risk of developing osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is commonly seen in elderly, more so among females after menopause. Other risk factors include thin built, early menopause, smoking, poor calcium intake, sedentary lifestyle, vitamin D deficiency.
Tobacco and alcohol can weaken your bones.
Why is osteoporosis common among Indians?
Vitamin D deficiency is very common in India. Changing lifestyle and urbanisation, unhealthy foods, lack of sun exposure all contribute to increased risk. It is also more common among patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Chron's disease etc.
How to diagnose osteoporosis?
Osteoporosis is diagnosed by measuring bone density, which is ideally performed using DEXA densitometer.
Should I get checked for Osteoporosis?
Ideally all women at menopause and all individuals over 65 should undergo this test. Before taking the test it is preferable to consult your doctor (endocrinologist).
What is the treatment for osteoporosis?
Nowadays there are many medicines to treat osteoporosis. These medicines may help new bone formation or prevent bone loss. Consult your doctor (endocrinologist) for the right choice of drug. Calcium vitamin D and exercise remain the mainstay of any program, regardless of which specific drug is used.
